To focus on the big picture is usually the first step to achieve your goal, which can be to develop Level Five leadership or become an exceptional CEO.
Most people understand technical part– being on the right track and industrial insights, but miss another one– a healthy Ego, one of whose reflection is Humility. Unless they can naturally focus on the big picture, leaders may be able to tell an ass kisser from a praiser but choose the ass kisser to satisfy their Ego and get back fired. These behaviors often are secondary to an unhealthy Ego.
In addition, it can be challenging to stay focused when disruptions and changes can emerge from any direction since the new needs can throw leaders out of their comfort zone. It can be harder to focus on the big picture in the storm since the storm can shut down leaders’ mind and body. Furthermore, strategies, culture, innovation, conflicts, team, etc. can all cause leaders miss the big picture. You can read live stories at “from PwC CEO Study to How to Go from Good to Great” where how to focus on the big picture is the classical example.
