How to deal with stress and stay healthy is different from how to lead and innovate, but essential to Level 5 leadership building. Good team physical and mental health management often wins leaders a lot of social credits.
Studies found that 100% of CEOs (Vistage) suffer from stress, and about 70% primary clinical visits are stress-related, for example, heart disease, insomnia, headache, fibromyalgia, etc. Meditation, yoga, deep breathing and medical treatments are only symptom relief. Subsequently, the same health issues keep on coming back and getting worse while the symptom relieves become increasingly expensive, for example, the treatments in heart disease can go from EKG (rhythm analysis) to bridge to bypass. Those who control stress through smoking, alcohol and drug also develop additional illnesses, such as addiction and lung cancer.
The root cause of poor stress management is a lack of the right tools to meet challenges, relieve stress and maintain optimal performance. By getting to the underlying causes, we started our successes at clinics in 2004. “Eliminate Stress & Insomnia with the Right Law” is a good example. You can find more stories in How Should CEOs Deal with Stress. Here is a short video.
STAGE 1. Start Right, Start Strong, and Minimize Stress
Nothing can maximize success and minimize stress and setbacks better than the right direction and sufficient tools. For leaders, the right tools include how to focus on the big picture, be effective and innovative, build sufficient leadership styles, conflict management and resilience, etc.
STAGE 2. Be Ready for the Worst
Setbacks and failures often come with the worst stress and cause severe health issues, such as heart attack and stroke. To be able to handle setbacks and failures is essential to not only business success, but also personal health. Exceptional leaders should “Be Happy, Be Your Own Doctor First,” so they can manage the physical and mental health of their own and their team and take charge of their success and human capital efficiently.
